Hawaii Suzuki Institute Information


The Hawaii Suzuki Institute (HSI)is designed for music students, their families and teachers who desire a week-long study of the philosophy and pedagogy of the respected Japanese educator, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. Students of all levels from ages 2-18 may participate. Observation-only is also welcome.

LOCATION

The summer Institute is usually held at the Iolani School in Honolulu but due to construction, the July 2012 Institute will be held at Central Union Church and Pre-School. The address is: 1660 S. Beretania Street, Honolulu, HI 96826. Located at the corner of Punahou and Beretania Streets.


Student Institute

Students can register for a daily three-hour, four-hour, or five-hour program.  Each student follows a personalized schedule of masterclass, group class and any enrichment courses. The three-hour course is recommended for younger students and will take place in the morning hours. 

The following Enrichment Courses are being offered:

  1. Dalcroze Eurythmics (for all ages)
  2. Art (for all students, grouped by age)
  3. Music Mind Games Theory (for age 6 and up)
  4. Orchestra (for Violin Book 1-6 and Cello Book 2-4)
  5. Advanced Chamber Music (Violinists Book 7+ and Cellists 5+)
  6. Advanced Theory
  7. Viola for Violinists (Violinists Book 6+)



Short-Term Teacher Training

Teacher training courses provide instruction in the Suzuki Method as prescribed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA).  The violin & cello courses will be taught by SAA registered teacher trainers and will cover different book levels each summer.  Instruction includes 15 hours of lectures and 8 hours of Institute observation.  In order to register the course with the SAA, a participant needs to attend all scheduled hours. Participants may register their course credits with SAA or my audit the course as an observer.  Visit SAA online for specific rules and requirements.

The teacher training is scheduled for July 19-27, 2012 at Central Union Church and Pre-School.

Participants and Auditors: $325.00; Observation only: $50
